Occupancy, spatial variance, and the abundance of species.

where a and b are constants. Indeed, such models can be used at a spectrum of spatial scales to describe spatial variance in the abundance of a single species at different times or in different regions and of different species across the same set of areas (Taylor et al. 1978; Taylor and Woiwod 1982). A second general pattern that has come to prominence more recently is that the proportion of areas occupied by a species (p, its probability of occurrence in a sample) increases with its average abundance (m) among those areas and again that this is manifest from microto macrospatial scales both for a given species at different times or in different regions and for different species across the same set of areas (Brown 1984; Gaston and Blackburn 2000). While a number of models have been developed to describe this pattern, most are special forms of the general model (Wright 1991; Hanski et al. 1993; He and Gaston 2000)

Abundance, spatial variance and occupancy: arthropod species distribution in the Azores.
1. The positive abundance-occupancy and abundance-variance relationships are two of the most widely documented patterns in population and community ecology. 2. Recently, a general model has been proposed linking the mean abundance, the spatial variance in abundance, and the occupancy of species. A striking feature of this model is that it consists explicitly of the three variables abundance, va...
متن کاملUntangling the relationships among regional occupancy, species traits, and niche characteristics in stream invertebrates
The regional occupancy and local abundance of species are affected by various species traits, but their relative effects are poorly understood. We studied the relationships between species traits and occupancy (i.e., proportion of sites occupied) or abundance (i.e., mean local abundance at occupied sites) of stream invertebrates using small-grained data (i.e., local stream sites) across a large...
متن کاملPreliminary studies on the impact of fish cage culture rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) on zooplankton structure in the southwestern Caspian Sea
The ecosystem of the Caspian Sea have been strikingly changed by human activities. This area has undergone significant ecological alterations and serious environmental degradation since the beginning of 1990s. The impact of fish cage culture on the zooplankton community was studied in the southwestern Caspian Sea, off Jafrud during January to April 2013. A total of 12 zooplankton belonging to 9...

متن کاملPositive Interspecific Relationship between Temporal Occurrence and Abundance in Insects
One of the most studied macroecological patterns is the interspecific abundance-occupancy relationship, which relates species distribution and abundance across space. Interspecific relationships between temporal distribution and abundance, however, remain largely unexplored. Using data for a natural assemblage of tabanid flies measured daily during spring and summer in Nova Scotia, we found tha...
